SUSTAIN (Assessing sustainability and strengthening operational policies) is a 3- year project part-funded by the European Regional Development Fund through the INTERREG IVC programme. It is a Regional Initiative addressing environment and risk prevention and the sub-theme water management and will contribute to delivery of Europe's EU Sustainable Development Strategy.  The Leibniz Institute for the Baltic Sea Research  (IOW) represent the project's German partner.

OBJECTIVES
The aim of the project is to create a new policy tool to help coastal authorities and communities throughout Europe to deliver sustainability on Europe's coast. This tool will be applicable in all 22 coastal states of the European Union and will be based on a set of easily measurable and fully tested sustainability indicators that will be developed and assessed during the lifetime of the project.

Sub-objectives:
• to draw up a definitive list of readily implementable, sustainability indicators for coastal areas,
• to self-assess the identified indicators in order that they can be used on a Pan-European scale,
• to increase the sustainability of partner areas through interchange of experience and transfer of practice during the lifetime of the project, on sustainability issues in the coastal zone.

HOW?
Collaboration between 12 partners belonging to different EU regions and profiles (public local and regional authorities, NGOs and research institutions) has been established to achieve the project objectives. SUSTAIN’s activities will entail the incorporation of objective quality information and targets related to key aspects of the EU Sustainable Development Strategy, and will focus its activity in the coastal zone, which are among Europe’s most fragile areas.

EXPECTED RESULTS
• A coherent, sustainable policy driven management tool.
• A set of agreed indicators, implementable at local and regional partner authority level.
• Partners with increased sustainability through exchange of experience.
• Contribution to the implementation of the EU Sustainable Development Strategy, especially in coastal areas.
